Dear Men: The Revolution of Truth (and forgiveness)

0-01-11-showerofnectarDear Men,

There is an epidemic of violence that men have been visiting on the world for centuries now. We have got to come to grips with the fact that men have been the agents of violence and destruction the world over. I know we don’t want to go out like that. That’s not our best. Let’s do something different!

If you missed the call to revolution – here it is.

If you missed the first step of friendship – check it here.

Next step: finding our way back to truth. Notice that relationship and friendship with other men comes before truth. The demon of isolation and loneliness is what gives rise to the untruth. This is important.

I was on a phone call with an old friend last week. I told him a truth about my life that I had been avoiding for months, so scared he would reject me. As it happens, he revealed to me a similar heartbreak in his own life. I was the only person he had ever told. The darkness lost its power and we both stepped into freedom.

Dear Men – A call to revolution

3men_circleDear Men,

I have been inspired by Tad Hargrave’s very valuable series of open letters to white men that invite those of us in that group to wake up to our privilege. It is a powerful challenge.

I want to address men. Period. And my wake up call is to the violence we perpetrate the world over and the capacity for love that is huge and untapped.

Police killings, hate crimes, terrorist attacks, gang violence, sexual violence, as well as the systemic violation of the Earth and her fragile environment… all acts perpetrated in vast majority by men.

What the hell is wrong with masculinity the world over? Across race and religion and every other identifiable line it is men who are behind the violence. It has been the same for centuries.

So, men, I want to ask us what we are doing about it. How are we taking responsibility for living into a masculinity of love and not violence? Continue reading

The Inevitability of Human Drama

ihearthuckabees4“The inevitability of human drama…”

This is my favorite line from the completely underrated and spiritually brilliant movie “I Heart Huckabees.”

It seems to me that everybody wants to sell us a better life and the spiritual marketplace is no different. It sells like hotcakes. People make millions and millions promising that they will help us connect with God so we can fix our lives. And that should be a red flag because God is definitely not for sale.

The Opposite of Trying

stillness__largeWhen is the last time you told yourself or another “I’m trying!” Whether it is trying to meditate, to overcome an addiction, to be compassionate, to exercise, to eat well, the personal growth world these days is full of trying.

But it doesn’t work.

Trying is what you do when you forget that you are what you are looking for.

I understand that we all want our best efforts to be rewarded. But the consciousness of trying is a barrier to getting what we really want.

We want to be okay no matter what. We want to be worthy and loved and accepted whether or not we succeed or try hard enough or don’t. Any of our lives, upon inspection, will contain many things that fall into these three buckets.

From the point of view of Truth there is no trying, there is only being and not-being. You can’t try to be your true self. You can only be it or forget to be it, and even then you are still being it deep down.

The spiritual journey is not about effort. It is not about trying. You can’t try to be love, you are love. You can’t try to find the Divine, you are the Divine.

I invite you to stop trying and try resting. Try relaxing beyond all that effort that simply reinforces the illusion of scarcity and choosing a different way to enter your life. What if you didn’t have to try? What if you were okay just the way you are?

What would you do if you knew you didn’t have to try? I suspect that inquiry will take us far closer than any program or discipline or practice. In fact, it is a discipline and practice of its own as we struggle against the conditioning that tells us that we are somehow in a deficit that needs to be made up for by effort.

The opposite of trying is being.

The secret of conflict – relationship martial arts at its finest.

12507276_1096287170382159_5605644374314532660_nMost of us really dislike conflict in our relationships.

If this is you then yot get so stuck there so often and so easily that you learn to really resist it.

But if you know how, conflict becomes one of the greatest forces for intimacy in your life.

There are different flavors of conflict.

Some partners go head to head blaming each other for making them feel badly. Both partners feel unjustly accused and angry.

Some relationships one person withdraws and shuts down and another pursues anxiously. One person feels wrong and the other feels abandoned.

Some relationships have lost the spark of conflict and are in a numb deep freeze.

Unresolved conflict is usually one of the reasons relationships disintegrate. Resentment builds and with each loop the conflict gathers more and more momentum.

So are you doomed? Is the answer finding a partner or a relationship with whom you won’t have any conflict? Good luck.

Most of you who have any life experience know that this approach doesn’t yield very good results.

Some people chose to fake it and suppress their emotions.

Some folks just loop over and over in fights that won’t stop.

Some people go to therapy and construct elaborate ‘agreements’ to try and prevent the triggers from happening.

Most people eventually leave the relationship.

But none of that really helps. What you need is to learn the secret of conflict and how to make it work for you to build intimacy.

The secret is that in every conflict you are at war with a disowned part of yourself.

A trigger is never just an external injustice. It always has a thread tied back to something you haven’t yet fully digested in your own life, long before your partner ever showed up on the scene.

So when you are triggered you need to learn how to trace the thread back and get to the place where you can dissolve the pain once and for all.

That’s right. Once and for all. It’s not even all that complicated.

And now you can rebuild intimacy with your partner or bow and leave the relationship knowing that you will not repeat the same dance again the next time.

This is what you will learn in Empowering Intimacy 2016

Empowering Intimacy is an approach to intimacy that breaks all the rules and conditioning that you inherited and gives you what you actually need: a foundation for true love.

Three Letter Words

The difference between “and” and “but” is the difference between grace and karma.

“And” allows us to step into a larger truth. It allows me to bring all of myself. It allows you to bring all of yourself. It allows us to be in full communion with all that is.

Change the way we speak, change the way we live…

Ten Practices to Enhance Intimacy – #2 Gaze into each other’s eyes

ICGazeWords can only take us so far. What we are truly longing for is to see our beloved and for our beloved to see us…naked. A nakedness that has nothing to do with how many clothes we have on.

Words are clumsy tools with which to communicate. There are so many words. We can easily talk too much in relationship without truly communicating, without communion.

Gazing into the eyes of another is one of the most profound experiences available to us in these bodies. The eyes reveal everything.

Ten Practices to Enhance Intimacy – #1 Tell The Truth

s1The practice of truth-telling is the greatest intimacy enhancer I have found. All blocks to true communion with another come from un-truth. Un-truth is the root of all suffering. All of it.

The only place I can meet my beloved is in the present moment.

The only place I can live any of my life is in the present moment.

In order to be in the present moment I need to accept the way things are right now. Within me and in the world outside of me. This is truth.

Spiritual Marketing? Eckhart Tolle sat on a park bench.

parkbench-3Thanks to my friend and spiritual marketing provocateur Katharine Dever, I have been really diving into the question of how my teaching and work meets the marketplace in a way that feels congruent with what I stand for.

What do I stand for? Deep awakening to the Truth – that who we are is not separate from the Love we all seek outside ourselves.

How? Undoing the lies of fear and shame that keep us suffering and transmitting pain to the world around us.

The tools? Presence. Authenticity. Truth.

Over and over again I find spiritual teachers and retreat leaders and intuitive counselors and psychics and coaches who promise that their product or service, alone and above all the rest, will completely change your life. It’s like reading a press release for Jesus. And, to tell you the truth, part of me is intimidated. Part of me thinks, “Wow, that is some high level stuff, I better just stick to this little corner over here.”

prosperity0909But then I remember that I have spent thousands of dollars and years of my life buying these promises. I have actually believed the hype many times. I suppose that’s why it works as a sales pitch. There is some part of the human ego structure that really wants to just find the right coaching package or retreat or audio download and be done with it. And that is exactly the egoic consciousness that I am called to dissolve in myself and support others to do the same.

I also must confess to the opposite temptation. Part of me wants to pull the spiritual arrogance card and just dismiss all those people as charlatans and sell-outs and walk away feeling superior. But I have done too much of my own shadow work to be satisfied with that. I own that part of me is jealous. Part of me wants to be looked to as a font of wisdom and have thousands of social media followers and have enough money to never worry about it again. So to simply wash my hands of the whole business and claim spiritual superiority isn’t an option. Part of me is scared I don’t have what it takes to be part of the marketplace and so I know accommodating that fear isn’t the answer. I have to go right into it and find a way to engage that is aligned with my heart.

So I am choosing to go in another direction. How can I be in the marketplace in a way that is integral and aligned to what I stand for? Here’s my marketing manifesto… for now. Like everything, it is an experiment and I will likely add to it as I go.

1. No prices that end in “.99” or “.97”. There is no amount of spiritual numerology that outweighs my judgment that this is just a psychological trick. It is so commonplace that we accept it. But it is not true and doesn’t even attempt to be. $97 is the same as $100. If I can’t sell it for $100 then it’s not worth that.

This is for real...

This is for real…

2. No fear based marketing. Have you noticed that there is a lot of internet marketing out there that tells you all about the cost of “not doing” something? The whole “can you afford not to?” angle? I find this both insulting, as if people can’t work that out for themselves, and also fear-mongering. One of the pillars of traditional marketing is to “establish a need.” In other words, this means to foster scarcity. This is the primary source of all egoic energy – the lie that we are separate from the Source, that there is a problem that needs to be overcome. To do this in the spiritual realm is completely antithetical. I have wept at some folks with powerful messages who have succumbed to this trap. I tried it once myself.

3. Be honest part I.001_big For me, this means no false promises and no false claims to originality. There are no shortcuts on the journey of awakening and healing our false perceptions. No one teaching or one healing is at all likely to be the silver bullet (hint: There are no silver bullets) – we are going to need different teachings and teachers at different stages of the journey. Likewise, there is absolutely zero chance that any teacher is saying anything new. It has all been said before. Moreover, we have all studied and practiced with people whose material we borrow from.

4. Be honest part II. There is a flip side. I must value myself and not be falsely humble. I must be willing to claim my contribution. Each of us has a different voice, a different set of authentic experiences that we synthesize in a unique way. These are precious currents of truth in which what we are saying comes alive in us and this truth will resonate with a particular group of people at this time and cultural context.

5. Tell the truth. I have been wrestling with the idea of affiliate marketing – basically a deal in which I give you a cut of the profits to promote my product with your contacts. In the end, I think the only problem I have is that this backroom deal is not part of the sales pitch. I never hear, “BTW, I am being paid to promote this,” just more of the “if you buy my friend’s product/teaching/workshop then the bluebird of happiness will nest in your branches” stuff. Lies of omission are still lies.

6. Trust. This is maybe the biggest one for me. Trust that the ends and the means are one and the same. Trust that the place I end up is a product of how I get there. Trust that the work of Love and Truth is so much bigger than me and rejoice and be grateful for all the blessings I have already.

At the end of the day, I don’t think I want to be special, I just want to be me. Not excessively important and not falsely humble. As one of my wonderful teachers, a genuine Indian guru, told us, “The only reason I am sitting in this chair and you are not is because I am sitting in this chair.”

🙂
