Five Spiritual Practices

Spiritual Practice

I have spent years of my life and many thousands of dollars on retreats and workshops in the hopes of finding the rare and elusive key to well-being.

I didn’t find it there.

It turns out that the key was hidden in plain sight and it looks like my life. The one I am already living. With all its weirdness and complexity and anxiety. This one.

And now the most amazing spiritual practices are little ways in which I have learned to harness exactly what is going on in my life to help me wake up to the truth about how things are and who I am.

These practices do not belong to me, they belong to the world. I am sure they have been discovered and lost and discovered and lost for as long as human beings have been searching for well-being.

Whether you sink or swim comes down to one thing…

Sometimes life seems impossibly tender. It seems easy to forget how vulnerable I am and then suddenly there it is.

A flood of sadness or fear or shame and, for a moment I forget if I know how to swim.

Thrashing about is exhausting. I did that for years. As if my little waving arms and feet could make the flood recede. But all I did was tire myself out.

It turns out I do know how to swim. We all do I think. I haven’t met anyone yet who doesn’t remember when I gently wade into the flood water with them and invite them to see what happens if they turn the thrashing into feeling.

Feeling. That’s what swimming is about. Feeling the water rather than fighting the water. From the tips of our toes to the small of our backs to the points of our chins.

When we feel the water we can swim. We drown when we fight it.

So today I feel the tenderness and the ache of living in this world. I notice the temptation to thrash and then I remember I can swim. I feel the sensations of sadness and fear and I let go of worrying about how they came to be or what I need to do to get rid of them.

And peace is here once more. Alongside and underneath and all around the flood of emotions. Small things matter again and I am grateful.

Disarming Donald

I am Donald Trump.

As a self-identified “progressive” and “conscious” human being I fervently imagine and proclaim my desire for the economy and political system to become more enlightened.

My Facebook friends and I all bemoan the inexorable waves of injustice and trade righteously indignant angry faces at the newest evidence of “density” in the world. We exchange virtual high fives at clever memes and gifs designed to cleverly point out the idiocy of the oppressors.

But, you know what: f*ck that shit.

It’s not enlightened and it’s not spiritual and it’s making the problem worse.

Love is Unconditional But Relationship is Not

I am convinced that at the level of essence we are all lovable and worthy. Absolutely. 100%. We do not need to earn anything from Life. We are loved whether we figure it out or not.

But you know what? Human relationship is not unconditional. That is a paradox that I see often gets lost in a lot of healing and consciousness work. It’s not enough to simply accept that we are lovable. We need to act as if that is true. How? By showing up for others.

In my experience, we all have to earn the right to feel good about ourselves in relationship and that comes with showing up for ourselves and others with commitment, integrity, reciprocity and accountability.

I believe this is where our empowerment comes from. Because it matters and we have the capacity to express the lovable essence we are in a way that creates intimacy and connection OR we have the capacity to stay stuck in our shadows and painful misconceptions.

Let’s claim our sovereignty and live ourselves into feeling good about who we are.

Are you dancing enough?

When did we stop dancing?

If I could myself and others just one instruction for living ourselves awake it would be this: breathe and move.

It all comes back to these two simple sacraments. The breath and the body. If we are in relationship with these mysteries then we are not far off the doorway to every-where and every-when.

If I ever get to be an old man, which I hope very much to be one day, I suspect I will look back and wonder why I did not breathe and dance more. Why would I have thought anything else in the world more worth my time and attention? What could possibly have been more important to teach my children?

So with my future old man self reaching back through time and tapping me on the shoulder I will take my own counsel. Each day this week I will breathe. Each day this week I will dance.

Who’s with me?

What is forgiveness?

What is forgiveness?

For me, the really powerful truth of forgiveness is that it is a *different way of seeing* which holds the tension between our essence and our ego.

We are so conditioned to identify with our pain body that whether we are acting from love: “I open my heart to you” or acting from pain “I close my heart to you” we use the same pronoun “I” to describe it. Both actions seemingly arise from “me”.

But on closer inspection I don’t believe this holds up.

The “I” that opens my heart is very different than the “i” that closes my heart. They are two completely different states of consciousness. The ego does not want us to differentiate between them because it benefits from us feeling guilty/unworthy/ashamed by our own actions. In fact, it reinforces the probability that we will continue to act out of fear of being bad which can only cause suffering for ourselves and others.

But when we realize that it was the ego/serpent in us that transmitted the pain rather than the truth of who we are we begin to see things in a way that allows us to experience redemption. We can still mourn and grieve our unconsciousness but we can rest in the knowledge that it was not a conscious choice.

As Kabir says, “All are forgiven and moreover, dears, no one has ever been guilty.”

And if we experience ongoing torment of our guilt we now get to name that too as the serpent who is using its own misdeeds as leverage to extend its power in our lives.

Trying to drink seawater – Loneliness and Relationships

image-3-for-coleen-28-june-2011-gallery-7063132Hey friends – Guest post by an amazing guy and good friend, John Roche. He nails the basic trap of immature intimacy.

Original post here.

Relationships have a unique power to make us feel totally shitty about ourselves.  Some of that has to do with loneliness, and some of it has to do with romance, but most of it has to do with the fact that being socialized by capitalism and pop songs has left us pretty unsure of what loneliness and romance actually are and how they relate to each other.

There are two very different kinds of loneliness.

Dear Men: Let’s change the story

Dear men,

CerunnosLast night I couldn’t sleep. I felt very frightened and disturbed by the political scene in the U.S., which is simply evidence of much deeper fractures. I wondered what I could do. I wondered what we could do as men to shift the culture of violence we have created.

I want to find a way in which I feel empowered to do something right now. Start changing the consciousness from this moment, this day.

I want a new story to tell our children about what happened in 2016. How about this:

In the face of grave systemic injustice, economic disparity, widespread racial violence, an industrial military complex that was out of control, and a “democracy” that was already proven to be corrupt, a group of ordinary men woke up and began to lead new lives.

Miraculously, as men began to come into contact with their own truth, the truth they had long been taught to discount and bury, they began to make different choices. They began once again to hold space for the feminine power of the world; little by little the banks of the river were being rebuilt and trust was being restored and the feminine river of life began to flow again.

Today I am hurting

Paradoxical Truth - Thomas C. FedroYou know those days when life takes you to the edge?

How deep can you feel? How far can you let go? How big can you get?

These are the questions Life is asking of me today.

There is a spiritual heresy out there that life gets easier if you are awake or ‘aligned’. Ask Jesus how that worked out.

The purpose of Life, it seems, is for the light to shine into darkness. And that sounds way too abstract. What that really means is that I get to find away to become present (my Light) to the pain I feel (the darkness). There is no heavenly dimension where this gets played out. It happens here and now right where you are and I am.
